2018 Ford Explorer engine options and features
The Explorer comes in 5 trims for 2018. It starts things off with the base model and goes up from there with the XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum trims. All-wheel drive comes standard on both the Sport and the Platinum trims, and it’s available at all other trim levels.
What’s under the hood? We’re glad you asked! The Explorer has an impressive array of engine options for 2018. Are you looking for a V6? Then you’re in luck. The lineup starts with a V6 engine standard. The base model and the XLT both get a 3.5-liter V6 engine standard, but they also have an option for a 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder if you want to save a little money in fuel.
The V6 gives you up to 17-city mpg and 24-highway mpg whereas the 2.3-liter EcoBoost provides 19-city mpg and 27-highway mpg. The horsepower difference is actually minimal as the 3.5-liter V6 pumps out 290 horsepower and the 2.3-liter EcoBoost gives you 280 horsepower. The latter engine comes standard on the Limited trim, though you can opt to put the 3.5-liter V6 back into the Limited.
There’s one more engine available for the Explorer, and it provides the best of both worlds. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 comes standard on the Sport and Platinum trims where it provides 365 horsepower. These all-wheel-drive only trims still provide a surprising amount of fuel economy with 16-city mpg and 22-highway mpg.
Enough about power and efficiency. What about technology? Here the Explorer will never fail to impress. With available SYNC 3 with SiriusXM satellite radio, Park Assist, rain-sensing wipers, Powerfold® Mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, and more, it’s safe to say that the Explorer is fully loaded with options.
