Wondering when and why it might be time to get a fuel system cleaning? It’s not exactly like oil changes and tire rotations where there’s a pretty general rule of thumb that people know and adhere to, so don’t feel bad if you’re not sure whether it’s time for this service. That said, it can also be all too easy to disregard this as something the mechanics in a quick-lube joint try to upsell you on and that it’s never necessary. There is a time (and we might even suggest a place) for this — so when should you clean your fuel system? We’ll give you the run down here.
Before you can really determine whether you need a fuel system cleaning, you should know what it entails. And for that, you’ll want to know what components comprise your fuel system. There’s the gas tank, of course, and the fuel lines which are the hoses that take gas to the engine. Then you’ve got filters that help keep things from getting clogged up with dirt and grime, and fuel injectors which spray fuel into the cylinder. Finally, you’ve got a spark plug, tasked with the very important job of igniting the fuel, which gets the crankshaft going and ultimately sets your vehicle into motion. So yeah… it’s important.
What happens when we clean your fuel system? Basically, we’ll add a safe, effective cleaner to the gas and run your engine for a bit to push the cleaner through the system. Then we add another cleaner directly to the engine — this is meant to remove build-up of carbon and other muck. Finally, we’re going to clean up the air intake to keep things flowing smoothly.
So how do you know it’s time for a fuel system cleaning? If it’s been a while since yours was last cleaned, you might be noticing that your gas mileage is up to what it used to be. In addition, there might be a lagginess where you once felt more power, and you might even feel a little resistance when you step on the gas. If you think you’re experiencing these things because your fuel system needs a cleaning, bring your vehicle in to us here at Holiday Ford and we’ll be happy to take a look. And if we do determine you’re in need of a cleaning, we might just have a special for that. Right now through the end of February 2015, we’ve got $15 fuel system services.
