Apr 20, 2015

We’ve all seen those incredible before and after pictures of stars and common folk after undergoing the latest fad diet or procedure to lose weight – pretty impressive stuff. You’ll see no such outer transformation from last year’s Ford F-150 to the new 2015 model, but trust us, you should still be mightily impressed with how much weight it’s managed to shed. Rather than looking better in a bikini, the new F-150 is actually stronger, more capable, and has improved durability over its predecessor. And we probably shouldn’t rule out its superiority in the swimwear competition, either, but we’ll leave that for you to test out. How much weight did the Ford F-150 lose? We’ll tell you just how much, and more importantly, how the fine folks at Ford made it happen.

Aluminum In, (Some) Steel Out

By now, you’ve probably heard about where the majority of the weight loss occurred, and that’s in the body. Through the replacement of high-strength steel with military-grade aluminum alloy, Ford was actually able to increase the strength while dropping the weight. As for the frame, there was actually more steel used to reinforce the F-150’s toughness, made possible without risking a weight addition because of the body material swap.

Weight Lost: ~ 450 lbs.

Other Areas

This is where things get surprising for people: It wasn’t ALL about the body material. In fact, Ford took weight from the F-150 in just about every area they could think of. There’s a lightweight parking brake, lighter front bumper, and steering knuckles that are half the weight of the previous model’s. The seats are lighter (and as with the body, even more durable, by the way), and even the materials used for the instrument panel lost some weight.

Weight Lost: ~ 250 lbs.

Ford F-150 aluminum vs steel steering knuckles

Aluminum steering knuckles  help the 2015 Ford F-150 lose some additional weight. Every bit counts!

That’s a total of about 700 lbs. lost from the previous model, and more strength than ever. Want to see the new 2015 Ford F-150 in action here in Fond du Lac? Stop in anytime and we’ll set you up with a test drive!
