Summer is road trip and travel season, and for many their cars are the means to do it. Here’s a few summer maintenance tips for trips to ensure safety and fun.

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is one of the most important systems to make sure is working if you’re going on a summer trip so you don’t trap your family or friends in a hot metal box for a few hours. Make sure you get your AC system looked at by a professional before the big trip, so you can make the most of your time.

Brakes

Breaks are, without a doubt, a top priority safety feature in a car. If you’re traveling a long way from home, make sure you get your brakes checked by an expert that you trust, rather than whoever ends up being closest to you when something goes wrong. If you’ve ever been in a car where the breaks start putting off a burning smell, you know the importance of checking them for the sake of a trips morale as well.

Tire Tread summer maintenance tips for tripsTires

Handheld gauges are inexpensive and are great for checking tire pressure. Most gas stations likely have a free air station where you can fill up before hitting the road. We’ve all heard of the penny trick for checking a tire’s tread, but if heavy rain might be an issue, you should bust out the quarter. If part of George Washington’s head is covered by the tire, then you have at least 4/32” of depth, which will give you more traction when the weather turns.

Air Filter

The last thing you’ll want when driving a long distance is a lower MPG and more stops at the pump from a clogged up air filter. Especially when replacing it is one of the least expensive services in car maintenance. Removing an air filter clogged with all the salt and debris from winter may improve your MPG by up to 10 percent.

Windshield Wipers

If you’re new to car maintenance, then it might surprise you to know that a windshield wiper blade should be replaced about every six months. We’re at a very important time in the year to do so, since winter is tougher on blades. Summer storms have a tendency to pop up out of no where and every bit of visibility helps when they do.
