People make little mistakes every day, and sometimes if you’re in a rush you might even forget to put your vehicle in park before turning it off and trying to get out. The 2017 Ford Fusion uses a unique rotary dial to shift from different gears like Drive, Neutral, and Park, but its form isn’t the only unique aspect of the Fusion’s shifter. The 2017 Ford Fusion also includes a Park safety feature, which will automatically put your vehicle in park when you forget to!

How does the 2017 Ford Fusion Return to Park feature work?
The Return to Park tech is a great safety feature for the 2017 Ford Fusion, especially if you’re particularly forgetful. The best part is that it even comes standard on every 2017 Fusion model! We’ve all been there, though, where you’re in a rush and forget to turn off your headlights or change your vehicle to park, but Ford has designed something to help. The feature is designed to automatically shift your Ford Fusion into park if:
- You turn the Ford Fusion off without shifting to park
- The driver’s door is opened while the vehicle is stationary and the seatbelt is unlatched
- The seatbelt is unlatched while the Fusion isn’t moving and the driver’s door is open
- The vehicle is off while still moving (shifts into neutral first at speeds below 5 mph)

The safety feature has been specifically designed to still allow for certain behaviors, such as opening your car door while moving and wearing your seatbelt to free something stuck in the door or to inspect parking lines. You’ll also still be able to put the Fusion in Stay in Neutral or Neutral Tow Mode, which is useful for things like flat towing. The shifter dial will even identify if you accidentally shift into reverse while driving at speeds exceeding 5 mph.
