We mentioned that they both sported three rows, but that doesn’t always mean they have the same seating capacity. In this case, it does though as both the Flex and the Explorer can be fitted with seating for either 6 or 7 people. In general, the Flex gives you a little more room with 155.8 cubic feet of total passenger volume available, but the Explorer comes very close with 151.5 cubic-feet of passenger volume available.

When it comes to cargo room, with all the seats down the Flex comes out ahead again but only slightly with 83.2 cubic-feet of max cargo room. The Explorer with all seats down gives you only a little less with 80.7 cubic-feet of cargo room. However, with the second row up, the Explorer beats the Flex by just .6 cubic-feet, and with all the seats up the Explorer actually provides more cargo room with 21 cubic-feet compared to 20 cubic-feet for the Flex.

When it comes to max power, it’s a dead tie at 365 horsepower, which makes sense considering they both share a V6 EcoBoost engine option at the top end.

However, power doesn’t always mean capability, and the Explorer actually gives you more towing capacity with a 5,000-pound capacity compared to the 4,500-pound capacity for the Flex.
