Fuel efficiency of the 2018 Ford Focus

Buying a compact car like the Ford Focus is often a smart financial decision, but if you are making the choice for financial reasons, then you likely want to know how fuel efficient it is too! We’ll help you out as we explore the fuel efficiency of the 2018 Ford Focus.

Does body style matter for efficiency?

You may have noticed that the Ford Focus is available as both a hatchback and as a sedan. These body styles may differ in aesthetics and cargo room, but they also differ in weight and aerodynamic qualities meaning that the hatch is typically more efficient than the sedan when equipped with the same engine. We’ll break down the efficiencies of both here.

Most of the hatchback lineup comes standard with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. On the base SE Hatchback, it provides 26-city mpg and 38-highway mpg. Due likely in part to larger wheels, the SEL and Titanium Hatchback trims get a slightly reduced fuel economy with 24-city mpg and 34-highway mpg.

There are some outliers in the Focus Hatchback lineup. We’ll start with the performance ST and RS models. The ST uses a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine that provides more power but gets 22-city mpg and 30-highway mpg. The RS has an AWD drivetrain with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, and it gets 19-city and 26-highway mpg. There’s also a Focus Electric Hatchback, which is difficult to compare directly, but it gets an electric mpg equivalent of 118 in the city and 96 on the highway.

Remember when we said that the hatchback is typically more fuel efficient? Well the Focus SE Sedan comes with an exclusive 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine with Auto Start-Stop Technology that actually gives it the best efficiency of the bunch. With this engine, the Focus SE Sedan can get up to 30-city mpg and 40-highway mpg.

All other Ford Focus Sedan models employ the same 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine commonly found in the hatchback lineup. Due likely in part to smaller rims again, the base S trim gets 25-city mpg and 34-highway mpg whereas the SEL and Titanium trims both get the same highway mpg but with 24-city mpg.
