A common practice with RV owners is flat towing. Flat towing is when you pull a car behind your RV with all four wheels remaining on the ground — sometimes it is also called four-down towing. Motorhomes and RVs are great for transporting you and some family or friends to your destination, but many also want to keep a regular car around for transportation needs after you set up shop. Thankfully, if you’re interested in flat-towing the Ford Focus, you’ll be able to!

How to Flat-tow a 2016 Ford Focus

Can you flat tow a 2016 Ford Focus? Not every model of the 2016 Ford Focus is able to be flat-towed, so you’ll want to double check your owner’s manual to see if yours is safe to do so. But in general Focus models with the 1.0L EcoBoost engine are not approved for recreational flat-towing behind an RV, and the 2.0L Ford Focus can be flat-towed, as long as you remain under 70 mph. Here are the steps you need to take for flat towing:

  • Turn on ignition and shift into neutral
  • Switch climate control system to recirculated air mode
  • Wait for entertainment display to say transmission is ready, and then turn off the ignition
  • Disconnect your battery
  • Start your engine within 15 minutes of reconnecting the battery after towing

Can you flat-tow a disabled Ford Focus?

We mentioned earlier that not every Ford Focus is approved to be flat-towed, but in case of an emergency — such as a disabled vehicle — you are able to flat tow a Ford Focus as long as you follow these conditions:

  • Face your vehicle forward
  • Place your transmission in neutral
  • Don’t exceed 35 mph and don’t travel longer than 50 miles
