When people think about an emergency kit for a car, winter quickly comes to mind. However winter isn’t the only season in Wisconsin, as much as it feels like it sometimes. Summer is now here, so it’s time to take the shovel and kitty litter out of your car, and replace it with some more relevant items for your summer emergency car kit.
Water
People run on water, it’s basically our version of gas. Some gallon jugs of water is something that everyone should have in their car, regardless of the season. That being said they do take on extra importance in the summer. If you have the misfortune to break down, it won’t always be in the most ideal place — which is why making sure you have ample amounts of water is imperative, especially when the temperature starts creeping toward the triple digits.
Sun Screen
This also ties in with not knowing when and where you might have car troubles. While some may scoff at the dangers of just a little sunburn, it’s often better to be safe rather than sorry. If you’re outside changing a tire or walking a long distance to a gas station, do you really want to risk getting a painful sunburn.
Tire Sealant
Not only does summer mean heat, but it also means tons of seemingly never ending road work. This means that you’re not always going to have the most ideal, smooth road to drive on. It’s smart to have a spare on you in case of a flat, but a foam tire sealant can also be a good, quick solution.
Phone Charger
Most of us wouldn’t think about going anywhere without our phone now-a-days, but — for better or worse — our devices are much more than just phones. Apps, games, and music can drain a battery pretty heavily if you’re not careful, which can put you in an awkward situation if you’re battery is too low to get you out of a tough spot. Thankfully a variety of chargers is available — ranging from a basic USB charged battery to a hand crank to manually charge your phone.
Rain Poncho
This is another of those items that while it may not be life-saving, it can definitely save your day from becoming miserable. Rain ponchos at gas stations are incredibly cheap and take up little space in a car’s emergency kit. It’s silly not to include one, since you never know when you’ll be outside changing that tire, and what our crazy weather is going to do.
