Ford Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection
The 2017 Ford Fusion was the first Ford vehicle to include the Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection feature, though it won’t be the last. The purpose of this feature is to reduce the likelihood of colliding with a pedestrian or eliminate it altogether. The Fusion, or other cars equipped with the feature, will scan ahead with a radar and camera to detect potential collision risks.
Once the vehicle gathers the data, it will instantly use an algorithm to both understand what is coming up and what action should be done. Ford collected and used more than 240 terabytes of test data (which is equal to 20.4 trillion books) to craft the Pedestrian Detection feature. If the Ford Fusion is found likely to hit an upcoming pedestrian, then the car will automatically apply the brake, if it’s equipped with the new feature. This can work in daylight with clear weather conditions up to 50 mph — but Ford notes that it doesn’t replace the driver. While it is helpful, the best defense against this situation is staying vigilant and driving safely.
