It’s not too often that we hear inquiries about a manual transmission on a specific vehicles, but there’s a subset of devotees that love having the level of control over a car that a manual transmission allows. There has been some interest in whether or not the Ford Fusion can come with a manual transmission, though.

Can you get a 2016 Ford Fusion with a Manual Transmission?

The current 2016 Ford Fusion doesn’t have the option for a completely manual transmission, but it does come with Ford’s SelectShift transmission, which lets you manually shift gears — also known as a clutch-less shifting in a semi-automatic.

How does Ford SelectShift Work?

SelectShift transmissions are still automatics, and can be driven as you would any other automatic transmission. However, if you’re someone who enjoys driving and wants extra control over your vehicle, you can put your Fusion in Sport Automatic or Sport Manual mode. Both will allow you to use either the toggles on your gearshift or the shift paddles on  your steering wheel to shift gears. The Sports Manual mode will give you the most control over the vehicle’s gears, but there are still automatic overrides to ensure you don’t damage your drivetrain.

Manual Transmission in the Ford Fusion ST

We recently discussed what people can expect from the upcoming Ford Fusion ST, and while we don’t know everything, it’s possible it could come with a manual transmission. Current ST offerings — like the Ford Focus and Fiesta — have manual transmissions, and it would make sense for another performance model from Ford to offer it as well.
