How to Open and Use the Ford Integrated Tailgate Step

This ultimately means more power, hauling capabilities and bed space, which are all good things. But it also means it can be tough to step up into the truck bed, even for taller individuals. That’s why we’re here to show you how to open and use the Ford integrated tailgate step, which makes it easy to gain access to the rear bed of your pickup.
If you have a Ford truck equipped with the tailgate step, it’s something you’ll definitely want to start using. Even if you find you’re capable of climbing into the bed space, using the step is a much safer option. Here’s how it works.
- Lower the tailgate.
- Press the black release button in the center of the step molding until it pops out.
- Pull out what remains of the step assembly until it falls into position.
- Locate the yellow bar top and pull until the black bar is extended fully.
- Lift the black bar up until it locks in place.
- There will also be a chrome bar fitted inside the black bar, so pull that up until it locks in place as well. This bar can now be used as a handle to help you step into the truck bed.
- Though the step is spring loaded so that it is moveable enough for stowing away, once you step on it, you’ll notice that it will not move any further than a horizontal position to ensure stability and safety.

Dangers of Trying to Climb Into the Truck Bed
Though every pickup these days should have some sort of step to help you gain access to the bed, they probably aren’t nearly as useful or safe as Ford’s integrated tailgate step. Even if you feel like you’re able to climb into the bed without problems, you may still be putting yourself at risk.
Attempting to step up or climb into the truck bed through means which are not designed for such an action could result in you slipping and falling. In addition, it could force you to place your body in unusual or uncomfortable positions, causing injury. Moreover, it can make getting back out of the bed a challenge.
