The teen years are that home stretch before adulthood, and for parents it can be as anxiety-producing a time as the first few months after they were born. A new world of responsibilities open up to young people during their teen years, and for parents the goal is often to keep them as safe as possible while letting them learn and explore. Perhaps no area is this more apparent than out on the road, where teen drivers get to drive and sometimes even own their own vehicles for the first time. Today we’ll offer up some tips for parents of teen drivers, including how Ford models in particular can help you keep some level of control over your teen driver’s behavior behind the wheel.

General reminders for teen drivers:

Driving requires your full attention. The phone can wait. Studies show that teens are 23 times more likely to crash if they text while driving. If your eyes aren’t on the road, you can’t possibly be on the alert for the unexpected –  and that includes other drivers like you who aren’t paying attention. Start with good habits when it comes to keeping your focus.

Speeding is another thing that generally  just isn’t worth it –  you’re at a much higher risk for getting into an accident, and to make matters worse the speed itself will make any accident that much worse. On top of that, it probably won’t even help you get anywhere faster –  Check out these these tips for actually making shorter trips.

Ford MyKey

For parents, the Ford MyKey system could be just what you need to ease the transition from you always being in the passenger seat when your teen is behind the wheel to letting them fly solo. Standard on new Ford models, MyKey lets you program set top speeds, ensure seat belt use, and set an earlier low-fuel warning.
