What to Do If There Is a Tornado While Driving

Believe it or not, spring is just about here, which means we will soon have another form of severe weather to worry about: tornadoes. A tornado is one of the most frightening weather experiences one will come across, but it’s important that you remain calm when they form and know what steps to take to remain safe. This leads many to wonder what they should do if there is a tornado nearby while they are driving.

It’s a good question to ask, as the open road certainly doesn’t provide the same level of protection the basement of our homes might. Therefore, to help you know what to do if you encounter a tornado while driving, here are some tips to consider.

How to Avoid a Tornado While Driving

  • Tornadoes are fast, so never try to outrun one in your car.
  • Analyze the direction in which the tornado is moving, and then make a 90 degree turn away from the direction you expect it is traveling. Since tornadoes can be unpredictable, be prepared to make additional adjustments to your driving direction.
  • Do not take shelter under your vehicle or overpass. Although you’ve probably heard this recommended in the past, this suggestion underestimates just how powerful the wind from a tornado can be, as many tornadoes will be more than capable of flipping your car or causing damage to/collapsing a bridge.
  • Though you should try to reach shelter if possible, if you are not able to do so, you can do one of two things. Stop the car and remain inside, slouching in your seat with the seat belt on, while also covering yourself with a coat or blanket to protect yourself from debris. You can also choose to exit the vehicle and pick a spot well below the height of the road, such as a ditch, and lie down while covering your head.
