One thing we’ve noticed about the automotive world is that people tend to get into habits, and then pass on those habits as fact. A good example of this is the thought that an oil change needs to be done every 3,000 miles, even though many newer vehicles can go longer in between changes. Another of these habits pops up a lot when the temperature drops, and it’s the question of should you warm your car up in the morning during Winter.

Stop Warming up your car before you drive in Winter

Has the idea that you need to let your engine warm up before you drive your vehicle in the winter been passed onto you? Well, as it turns out, this is actually one habit that you’re going to want to break. All you’re doing is burning fuel when you let your car idle for several minutes before driving it, and even possibly shortening the life of your engine.

So how do you get your engine hot enough that it runs better in the winter? Well, the best way to do this is to actually drive it. Letting your car idle to warm up isn’t going to do the trick, but driving your car sooner rather than waiting is actually the method you should be taking. Of course, you’re still going to want to go a bit easy on the gas pedal until your engine gets to temperature, otherwise you’ll just be burning excess fuel by trying to push it.
