Tips for Driving In an Ice Storm
Snow during the winter season brings enough trouble when it comes to safe driving, but what might be even worse is an ice storm. Though these may be more typical at the beginning or end of winter, when temperatures are fluctuating between above freezing and below freezing, they really are a concern all winter long and can create some particularly slick condition. Thankfully, Ford has provided drivers with some tips for safely driving in an ice storm.

How to Drive In an Ice Storm
Before we share some of these tips, it’s important to note that you should never drive in such conditions if you don’t have to. Unfortunately, some drivers do get caught out in an ice storm or other slippery conditions, so it is still important to have some safety tips tucked away in the back of your mind. Here are some of the ways you can stay safe the next time you experience an ice storm.
- Slow down and keep a safe space around you. Avoid getting too close to cars either in front of you, behind you or on either side of you.
- If it is sunny, or you’re using your headlights, watch the road for ice patches as they may produce a noticeable glare when the light hits them. Avoid them if you can do so safely.
- Avoid bridges if possible, but if you must cross one, be aware that ice can form quicker on a bridge then on a typical roadway.
- If your car starts to slide, don’t try to power your way out of it. Remove your foot from the accelerator and focus on steering the car in the direction of the skid. If you have to brake, attempt to do so gently rather than abruptly.
