How to Drive Safely in Fog

Most drivers don’t think about the spring season as being a dangerous driving season. Winter always gets the focus whenever it comes to weather-related driving hazards, but spring can come with its own concerns, particularly in the form of fog.

Therefore, to help you drive more safely when fog arises, we’re going to provide you with some tips that you can keep in mind. We’ve posted them below, but if we missed any, be sure to share them in the comments section.

Tips for Driving in the Fog

  • Drive slow, but not to the point where you become a hazard yourself. Since you can’t see as far as usual, you’ll want to adjust your speed to ensure that your reaction time isn’t affected by your inhibited vision.
  • Though you may feel more comfortable keeping the taillights of the car in front of you in sight, it would actually be safer to maintain a safe distance from the car ahead.
  • If your car has fog lights, there’s a reason for it, so be sure to use them. High beams simply won’t work in fog.
  • Since your visibility is reduced, you’ll want to pay even more attention to the sounds of traffic. Rolling down your windows will help you hear approaching cars or even accidents ahead.
  • Use the white line in the road to guide you rather than the center line so that you aren’t as close to oncoming cars.

In the end, if the fog is simply too dense for you to drive safely, you should pull off to the side of the road. That being said, you should never stop in the middle of the road. Instead, pull off to the side and turn your flashers on.
