Integrating vehicles with the most recent technology has done a lot to improve the comfort, features, and safety in modern vehicles. The rear-view camera for backing up did a lot, but a new camera system that Ford is implementing in vehicles looks like another step forward in terms of safety.

The Ford split view camera feature not only shows what is in front or behind a vehicle, but also traffic and obstacles coming from the sides.

What is it?

Essentially, the split view camera is a wide-angle lense on both the front and back of the vehicle. The lense is able to capture a larger field of view than a traditional camera, and then it feeds the video to the vehicle’s screen. The screen then breaks up the video into three parts, separated what is left, center, and right of you into understandable chunks. As soon as a vehicle reaches 6.2 mph, split view is shut off.

For some this will definitely reduce some of the stress associated with driving in busier areas or packed parking lots. It can be very useful cluttered intersections that don’t offer much vision. So instead of creeping forward slowly, you could also partially rely on the split view camera, and reduce the risk of accidentally pulling up too far. Its usefulness in parking lots is undeniable, since it allows you to back out of your spot without worrying about other cars or people just out of view.

When is it available?

For some models, it already is! Split view was first introduced on the 2015 Ford Edge, which features the front camera. The 2016 Explorer Limited comes standard with both front and back split view, and will be featured in the Explorer Platinum that’s awaiting release. Ford has also said that split view will be offered on all its SUVs globally by 2020.
