Many Mustang owners in places like Wisconsin consider storing their vehicle for the winter. This is a great way to keep it in the best condition possible and to not risk it in slippery weather or salted roads. However, it is important to take proper steps before packing your car away for winter, otherwise, you could damage your Mustang. Not sure how to store a car for winter? Take a look at our tips!

Change your Car’s Oil

This is an easy one to do, but it can go a long way in protecting your vehicle. Old oil that sits for long periods of time can lead to corrosion on certain engine parts. The best thing to do is just get a new oil and filter change right before you’re ready to say goodbye for a few months.

Take care of your battery

If you’re able to take out your Mustang and drive it every so often during winter, then you can leave the battery be. Most people, however, tend to just keep it in the garage the entire time, but you need to make sure you don’t kill your battery. You can disconnect your negative charge cable, but this will remove your radio presets. Another option is getting a battery tender, which feeds it enough energy to prevent it from dying.

Ward off pests

Your car is the perfect home for little critters, but there are steps you can take to make sure it stays vacant. You can put steel wool in your exhaust pipe opening, dryer sheets in your interior and trunk, and mothballs around the perimeter of your Mustang.

Take care of your tires

It’s not recommended to keep your car up on blocks, but you also need to avoid your tires getting a permanent flat spot. One of the most popular methods is overinflating your tires (be careful to not exceed the max rating) to keep them nice and round.

Wash it thoroughly

You should clean both the inside and outside of your Mustang. Dirt on the exterior can hold moisture, possibly leading to rust. We recommend giving it a good wash and wax before storage time. You should also go through the interior and make sure you’re not leaving anything in there that will get smelly over time!
