When there’s something wrong under the hood of your car there will often be a few telltale signs that something is up. And this might sound odd, but in many causes you can actually tell that your car has a problem by smelling it first — before you’re even able to see the signs. A sweet smell coming from the vents is a sign of coolant leaking somewhere in your vehicle. There are many different areas where the issue could be stemming from, but generally a mechanic will check your radiator, condenser, and heater core — among other areas.

You can also visually inspect your hoses and belts to see if anything is frayed, cracked, or bulging. If the leak is big enough, then you’ll also notice that your vehicle is becoming hotter than usual by inspecting the temperature gauge.
